Delegations of Authority

Delegations of authority refer to the assignment of decision-making responsibilities to a specific individual or group of indivdiuals at UC San Diego. 

A delegation and/or re-delegation of authority is made with the intent to promote efficiency in the completion of tasks as well as the empowerment of individuals best suited for its implementation and execution.

Below is a breakdown of Academic Personnel related delegations and re-delegations of authority as they relate to academic and administrative appointments and reviews, academic leaves, discipline and dismissal, academic compensation, and academic recruitment.

Please note:

  • UC San Diego's Authority & Review Chart continues to be in effect and may be accessed here
  • The information on this page may be updated and/or revised on a continuous basis and updates will be noted under the sub-section titled "Delegation Updates".
  • Actions normally delegated to Department Chairs, Deans, VC-Health Sciences, or VC-Marine Sciences involving an exception to policy or outside normal delegated parameters requires submission to Academic Personnel Services for review and approval by the Chancellor, Executive Vice chancellor, and/or Sr. Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. 
  • Actions delegated to Departments Chairs, Deans, VC-Health Sciences, and VC-Marine Sciences are subject to post-audit review by Academic Personnel Services.

Following a rescission of existing delegations and a new reissuance of delegation of authority by the Chancellor to the Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs (EVC-AA), the EVC-AA delegated to Divisional Deans and VCs of Health Sciences and SIO the authority to make academic review decisions, as described in a Delegation of Authority for Academic Review Actions – Research Scientist Series chart, dated January 29, 2019, attached to the delegation, that also detailed the authority for actions being retained by the Chancellor and the EVC-AA.
