• Full-time Senate faculty (Professor, Professor in Residence, Professor of Clinical X) appointed at Step I and above
• Full Teaching Professors (Senior Lecturer with Security of Employment) and above 

The application period for the 2022 Academy is now open through Monday, February 7, 2022.

Applicants may apply with dean and department chair or division chief endorsements, or may be nominated by deans or department chairs.  Participants will be selected through a competitive application process.  Applicants are to complete the online application and obtain the required endorsements.  If you wish to nominate someone for the FLA, please forward their name to Lynn Field-Karsh,  lfield@ucsd.edu.

Participants will learn:

• about the University, its organization and operations;
• to effect and manage change;
• to build collaborative, collegial relationships within and outside of the University;
• to distinguish the skills and attributes of effective academic leaders, as well as the challenges and rewards of becoming an academic leader;
• to consider current and future challenges and opportunities in higher education;
• to understand the benefits and imperatives of diversity, self-awareness, and ethical leadership.

Seminars will begin in April 2022 and continue approximately twice monthly through late May 2022 and after a break for summer, resume again in October 2022 with completion in early December 2022.  All sessions will be held Friday mornings 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  If selected, participants must commit to attend all sessions.  The seminar dates and times for 2022 will be:

The seminars (to be held virtually) will be interactive and participants will engage with case studies using relevant current examples. All sessions are devised to develop key skills and allow faculty to put learning into practice to enhance their ability to bring about positive change and either meet or address personal, professional, and organizational goals. 

Introduction to FLA & Building Community

FLA leaders will explore the arc of the overall leadership program and get to know one another through a goals and values assessment.

Addressing Faculty Bullying

Bullying by faculty and othere academics, while rare, can have lasting effects.  In this session we will explore definitions, case scenarios, policies, strategies for prevention and de-escalation, as well as introduce campus tools and resources for leaders.

Anti-Racism Themes

This session will explore anti-racism themes and related challenges for today's academic leaders.

Being a Learner-Centered Leader

Leadership in Implementing a Learner-Centered Approach:  Leaders will learn about campus resources available to help faculty become more effective at supporting students, especially those facing challenges. The session will discuss the range of campus resources available to support students facing academic and social challenges. Campus leaders both need information to support students in time-sensitive and crisis situations, as well as overall strategies to create safety for students and faculty to seek the help they need. This engaging discussion will provide scenarios based on true UCSD experiences and participant interest to help make appropriate referrals and connections to campus resources.

Financial Leadership & UC San Diego Budget Overview

CFO Ouillet presents an overview of the UC San Diego budget and will provide an overview of strategic budget planning.

Fireside Chat with Chancellor Khosla

Path to Leadership:  Chancellor Khosla will be our guest during this session and will discuss his own path to leadership and qualities that he seeks in campus leaders.

HR Essentials, Part I - Working with Represented Employees

This session will provide attendees with a high level overview of Labor Relations & Issues Managing Represented Academics & Other Employees, including terminology, contracts and case scenarios for an interactive discussion.

HR Essentials, Part II - Staff Performance Management & Disability Accommodations

An overview of the following topics, along with interactive case scenarios, will be covered:

Humanizing the Academic Environment by Building Community

The session will focus on tools faculty leaders can use to humanize the academic community to lead with head, hand, and heart. Despite the axiom that “leaders are born, not made,” most people learn how to lead through their own experiences and through mentoring, feedback, and personal reflection.  This session will discuss ways to bridge crucial interpersonal relationships through coaching, mentoring, and sponsorship.

Leading for Excellence & Diversity

This session, led by VC-EDI Becky Petitt and members of her team, will include conversations on how faculty leaders can foster a diverse and inclusive environment for faculty at UC San Diego, where all can advance and succeed.

Negotiation, Difficult Conversations, Conflict Resolution

This interactive session will review key components of a successful negotiation including preparation, information exchange, bargaining, and obtaining commitment. We will discuss emotional intelligence and keys to negotiation across behavioral styles –understanding risks, rewards and context. Through case studies proposed by faculty participants, this session will also discuss negotiation outcomes (bouncing back after a failed negotiation, understanding the range of outcomes, emotions, conflict, discrimination and what to do next).

Skills in Educational Leadership

Leaders from the Teaching and Learning Commons will engage participants in practical hands-on discussion of skills and tools to assist faculty to grow as educators. Faculty participants will learn about the resources provided by and strategies used by the T+LC and have an opportunity to learn from real-life situations.

EVC Simmons will close-out the Faculty Leadership Academy with final thoughts on leadership and awarding of completion certificates.
